At least six people are dead and 12 are injured, some in serious condition, after a Metro-North Railroad train in suburban New York collided with a vehicle on the tracks at the beginning of rush hour Tuesday night.
Along with five passengers on the train, the female driver of the vehicle, which was trapped between the highway guards on the train track, was killed, according to WABC.
The fiery crash took place in Valhalla, New York, when the train hit the black Jeep Cherokee, which was crossing the tracks at Commerce Street around 6:30 p.m., said Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, reports The New York Times.
The train had left Manhattan's Grand Central Station at 5:45 p.m. The Jeep and the front of the train erupted into flames and the smoke could be seen for miles around.
In bitter cold temperatures, passengers evacuated themselves through the rear of the train, and about 400 of them were taken to a local rock-climbing gym for shelter, according to Donovan.
In all, more than 800 people were on the train at the time of the crash, reports CBS New York.
One of those injured was listed in very serious condition, sources tell the New York Post.
