Artist Carves Pearls Into Incredible Pieces of Jewellery

Tokyo based jewellery designer Shinji Nakaba does something incredible with pearls, transforming them into haunting looking skulls. The designer has been creating jewellery since 1975. Pearls are not his only choice of material as he also uses everyday items and objects such as aluminium beer cans, plastic bottles and sometimes even rubbish. On every single skull he writes  “Va nitas” which is Latin for “vanity,” a reference to the meaninglessness of life on earth and the pursuit of material wealth. You can see more of his work on his   website.

HEAVY METAL MUSIC IS BEING USED TO ATTRACT SHARKS IN AUSTRALIA

Who knew Great Whites had a soft spot for Morbid Angel? A Discovery channel film crew have been searching for a giant shark in Australia known as ‘Joan of Shark’ (good one!) and to get her attention, they blasted death metal into the water. Why death metal , you’re asking, right? It’s because sharks can sense music’s low-frequency vibrations – they resemble the sounds of struggling fish. AC/DC also works, they found back in 2011. The shark this crew is trying to attract is a big one – more than 16 feet long and weighing (they think) up to 1.8 tons.

Regular Soda, Please: Hormone That Differentiates Sugar, Diet Sweeteners Could Exist in Humans

We’ve all been there: We eat an entire sleeve of fat-free, low-calorie cookies, and we’re stuffing ourselves with more food 15 minutes later. One theory to explain this phenomenon is that artificial sweeteners don’t contain the calories or energy that evolution has trained the brain to expect from sweet-tasting foods, so they don’t fool the brain into satisfying hunger. However, until now, nobody understood how organisms distinguish between real sugar and artificial sweetener. Now, a researcher at the University of Michigan has discovered how the brain of a fruit fly differentiates between the two. Because that molecular machinery is present in the guts and brains of humans on a larger scale, Monica Dus, assistant professor in the U-M Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, believes human brains will differentiate in the same way. Fruit flies and humans share about 75 percent of the same disease-causing genes, says Dus, first author on a study that outlines the fi

Sooooo Fujifilm’s New Camera Sees Through Some Clothes

The Fujifilm X-T1 might be our favorite camera of the past few years, and a spin-off version of the mirrorless shooter is about to add some eyebrow-raising tricks. Today, Fujifilm announced the new mirrorless X-T1 IR, which shares the same core specs and body style as the still-available X-T1. But this new camera has one big difference: It might be able to see through clothing. Some clothing, at least. That’s because it’s able to “see” infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. Visible light falls within a wavelength of 390nm (violet) and 700nm (red). Beyond that 700nm ceiling, you enter the near-infrared range between 750nm and 950nm. According to Fujifilm, the X-T1 IR can capture light at wavelengths up to 1,000nm, dipping its toe into the mid-infrared range. It’s also able to see long-wave ultraviolet light in the 380nm to 400nm range. Infrared photography can create some very artful pictures. It captures trippy, dreamlike images of landscapes. In broad daylight and the th

Twitter tests News Tab to make scanning headlines easier

Twitter is always experimenting with new features, A/B testing across the world to figure out the next experience on the platform. It seems that one of those experiments is a special News Tab, according to a report by BuzzFeed. The tab, which sits on the navigation bar of the Twitter app, has already rolled out to users in Japan. It provides a list of headlines from Twitter-approved publishers, designed to help people get the news of the day quickly and easily. The tab appears to be a more content-driven version of the app’s old “Discover” tab, which was discontinued on the mobile app in April. Founder and interim CEO Jack Dorsey pulled no punches at the company’s earnings call for the second quarter of 2015 last week, saying that he that product initiatives haven’t seen the audience growth and participation the company was hoping for. He also criticized the perceived high barrier of entry into Twitter, and made strong overtures to indicate that the reverse-chronological feed we know r
