KYIV, February 23 /Ukrinform/. Pope Francis has accepted the invitation to visit Ukraine. Negotiator at the center for facilitating the hostages' release at the Security Service of Ukraine Yuri Tandyt said this on the air of the Ukraine's Channel 5. "A few days ago I returned from the Vatican, where we met with Pope Francis. The day before yesterday a letter from President Poroshenko with the invitation had been given to the Pope, and he told us that he would come to Ukraine. So I want to congratulate Ukrainians that the Pope Francis, who prays for peace in our country, is likely to come to us," Tandyt said. February 21, German chancellor Angela Merkel met with Pope Francis, and discussed, inter alia, the situation in Ukraine.

The Oscars ceremony at the 87th Academy Awards took place in Hollywood’s 3,300-seat Dolby Theatre in California on Sunday evening. Surprise Ukrainian offensive claims to have liberated a number of villages in direction of Novoazovsk Ukraine's volunteer Azov Battalion has announced on its Facebook page that the battalion has begun military operations to liberate the Ukrainian Azov sea coastal strip towards Novoazovsk. Since the operation began in the early hours of February 10, Azov Battalion officials claim to have liberated the villages of Pavlopil, Komiternovo and Shirokino. Azov Battalion troops have posted photos from liberated villages, including images of local administration buildings, in order to add credibility to their claims. Update: Ukraynska Pravda reports that Ukrainian National Security Defence Council Oleksandr Turchinov is directing the operation and is located near Mariupol.
