For years, scientists have warned of the "next big one," an earthquake so powerful that it could topple buildings, slash power, and take lives across California. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it's a wild possibility scientists are actually exploring: how to fit a space station inside an asteroid. Why would we attempt such a bizarre feat of astro-engineering? Because the spin of the asteroid would create enough gravity for mining equipment to be effectively used, giving us a way to tap into the rich minerals and deposits inside these celestial rocks.

Thousands of homes across Sydney and the Illawarra remain without power as crews continue to work through complex repairs after an intense burst of thunderstorms overnight. A second wave of storms was predicted to batter Sydney again, but the Bureau of Meteorology has revised down the likelihood of wild weather on Saturday night. Endeavour Energy said it expects to work into the night to restore power to 2500 customers, with many of them to spend a second night in the dark.

This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveals an ancient, glimmering ball of stars called NGC 1466.  It is a globular cluster — a gathering of stars all held together by gravity — that is slowly moving through space on the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of our closest galactic neighbors. NGC 1466 certainly is one for extremes. It has a mass equivalent to roughly 140,000 Suns and an age of around 13.1 billion years, making it almost as old as the universe itself. This fossil-like relic from the early universe lies some 160,000 light-years away from us.
